I’ve been working on this book since LAST YEAR and there are no words to describe completing something I’ve spent so many hours of my life doing. It was truly a labor of love because all of the art is inspired by Paris fashion designers and illustrators from the 1920’s, including George Barbier, Erté, Jean Lavin, Poiret, Chanel etc. As a child my mother gave me my first book of Erté illustrations, and I was simply enthralled. In fact, that book of illustrations was the primary reason I became interested in both art and fashion. Years later while I was in college, I enrolled in a fashion illustration course and my big project for the semester was a set of Erté inspired illustrations. These are the very same illustrations that really made me want to design and illustrate an entire coloring book based upon art from the Golden Age of Paris fashion.
The coloring book also features fashion figures against key Parisian landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Élysées, the Métro, and the Chanel boutique so the colorist may image how these quintessential Parisian fashions might have looked against the backdrop of Paris itself.
While some of the illustrations are a close approximation of the original designs in French magazines, in other instances they are only loosely inspired by the original work, and I took a great deal of creative liberty by changing a part of the fashion ensemble or completely modifying the background or foreground.
The illustrations featured in The Roaring 20s coloring book also show a wide range of fashion and looks for the “chic” Parisian woman in 1920, including sumptuous evening gowns, flamboyant flapper dresses, neat tailored suits, smart walking and dinner outfits, whimsical pajamas, sportswear and even winter outdoor wear. It also includes bridal wear, theater costumes, and summer wear/ bathing suits.
In this respect, the goal of this coloring book is to give the adult fashion colorist a real glimpse into how fashionable French women lived their lives in the early 20th century. Wealthy women, for example, in the early part of the decade were still expected to change from a morning to an afternoon dress. These afternoon dresses, or tea gowns, were less formal and adorned with sashes, bows and even artificial flowers as you’ll see in these pages.
Here is an example of two completed coloring pages from two of my favorite plates:
Each illustration works well with a wide variety of color schemes. As one example, here are two versions of one of the fashion illustrations in two different color schemes: warm and cool. Both work wonderfully yet give off a completely different mood. One is warm and soft, but the other is bold and dramatic. So I believe this coloring book will appeal to colorists who really like to explore and play with a wide variety of color schemes.
And because I really want to give back something to the coloring community, here are two FREE samples from the coloring book: Just click the thumbnails to get to the full sized images!
I truly hope you get as much joy out of coloring these pages as I did drawing them.
