Our Prima Ballerina Backpack Is Well . . . Primo!

“Prima” in Italian means “first.” A “prima ballerina” is short for prima ballerina assoluta or absolute first ballerina, a title given to the most notable female dancers. A successful ballerina’s career moves from becoming a soloist in a ballet company, then principal or “leading” dancer, and eventually a Prima Ballerina Assoluta--a title awarded only to those dancers who are the best of their generation. In other words, to become a prima ballerina is to become the best ballerina not merely in a single company, or even in the world, but the best ballerina of an entire generation. Right now, the world’s most famous ballerina is arguably Misty Copeland although she hasn’t made the list of the top prima ballerinas yet. Many Prima Ballerinas received their titles in recognition of their superb performance as Odette/Odile in the Swan Lake Ballet. At Chub & Bug, we love to create art, decor and most importantly school supplies and gear that inspire kids at heart. Ballerinas are fantastic role models for children because they embody strength, grace, and discipline--all qualities necessary for success in life. In our Prima Ballerina backpack we created a wonderful story of a ballerina in Paris who is inadvertently caught in a downpour and then uses her dancing skills to evade a large puddle in a cobblestone street. Rather than merely jumping over the puddle, the prima ballerina executes the most difficult leap—indeed movement—in ballet, known as “Le Grand Jete.” As she leaps, she inadvertently provides shelter to an adorable mouse also caught in the downpour. In this way, the ballerina and the mouse are performing an urban Pas de Deux or traditional “dance for two” in ballet.
We love how our Prima Ballerina exudes talent, grace, and fearlessness as she navigates the cityscape. She is as fierce as she is fearless. And we hope this bookbag will inspire your little one not only to dance—especially in the rain—but also to find clever and ingenious ways to solve any problem life throws at her.
“Busy Bee”—A Backpack Fit for a Queen (or King)

Look around you. What do you see? A beautiful flower? Or a luscious piece of ripe fruit hanging from a tree? So much of the beauty of nature wouldn’t exist without bees. While bees spent millenia on the list of most hated insects, it’s only in the last decade that bees' true value to humanity has become known. Infact, if bees were to go extinct, humanity’s food systems could be so severely impacted it could lead to a global famine. Just think about the fact that roughly 90 percent of cherries and blueberries depend on honeybees for their pollination. Currently, honeybee colonies are suffering from colony collapse disorder and whole populations of bumblebees have declined steeply. To be sure, the wonderfully industrious Rusty Patched Bumblebee has recently been placed on the endangered species list.
So bees are not only essential to our survival, they’re also increasingly becoming important to our mental health and well-being. Did you know that honeybees and bumblebees can recognize human faces? Bees aren’t just smarter than we originally thought, they are capable of developing rapport and even relationships. This means it's actually possible to keep a bumblebee as a pet--to become a true beekeeper: someone who cares for and protects bees.
And that brings us to the inspiration for our Busy Bee backpack. Our Busy Bee school bookbag features a family of “busy” bumble bees working around their honeycomb home. The bumblebee is the only known bee species currently on the endangered species list, but it's also the gentlest and friendliest bee. Although bumble bees have stingers, they’re so gentle and good natured that it’s actually difficult to get them to sting you. Indeed, in the morning before they get warmed up and get ready to begin a day's work, they’ll actually sit still and let you rub their “teddy bear” fur :)

But unfortunately, like bees, they too are also going to become endangered in the next decade, so generating awareness of lovebirds’ situation can help save them.
